BBC News – Foreign medical workers among 10 killed in AfghanistanAnnotated – See excerpts (bulleted) after my comments in the Read more.

Tragic news.

My previous post was about my talk at a church where I encouraged Christians to have Jesus-like interaction with Muslims.  A couple approached me after the service and told me that, while this was a nice idea and they were all for being like Jesus, it could not be done in certain situations.  They related a situation their daughter is in where she is verbally harassed by young Muslim men and does not feel safe. (I suggested that she locate a local Muslim leader and tell him what these young men are doing.)

However, after thinking about their daughter’s situation – and then hearing this news from Afghanistan (Christian medical workers killed by the Taliban), I realize I should have said two more things. First, it is not easy – especially when you are personally affected.  The couple that talked to me, and to a greater extent, the friends and families of those killed in Afghanistan will have a much harder time maintaining Jesus-like interaction. How would I react if it was my daughter or brother?

Second, Jesus-like interaction does NOT mean pretending everything is OK. Injustice, immorality, hypocrisy, deception, murder, etc. are all condemned in the Bible (and Koran).  I am deeply saddened by the murders in Afghanistan – as well as angry and bewildered – How can a human murder other humans in cold blood just because he thought they were talking with others about their faith? I believe that God will judge the perpetrators of this crime. BUT, I need to remember that the vast majority of Muslims in the world would AGREE with me.

  • Eight foreigners and two Afghans have been found shot dead next to abandoned vehicles in the north-eastern Afghan province of Badakhshan, officials say.
The foreigners were six Americans, one Briton and a German, who worked for an international charity providing eye care and medical help.
The vehicles were found a day after contact was lost with the group.
Local police said robbery might have been the motive. However, the Taliban have said they were behind the attack.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said Bibles translated into Dari had been found.

  • “Yesterday at around 0800 (0330 GMT), one of our patrols confronted a group of foreigners. They were Christian missionaries and we killed them all,” he told the AFP news agency.

He later told the Associated Press they were “spying for the Americans”.

  • In a statement published on its website on Saturday, IAM said: “At this stage we do not have many details but our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who are presumed killed.”
“If these reports are confirmed we object to this senseless killing of people who have done nothing but serve the poor. Some of the foreigners have worked alongside the Afghan people for decades.”
“We hope it will not stop our work that benefits over a quarter of a million Afghans each year,” it added.
